I am compiling a list of online shops located in Germany. I’ve only ordered from a few of them, so I couldn’t give you a “review”. Most of the sites are only in German, and I notated the ones that are in English. Special thanks to Dorothee for filling me in on what’s out there! If you have a “review” of a particular shop or know of any others (esp. indie dyers!), please add a comment.
Indie dyers:
Rohrspatz & Wollmeise: Handpainted yarns by Claudia, highly recommended, love her sock yarns and worsted weight.
Sheepaints: I just put in an order for some sock yarn, haven’t gotten it yet… The site is in German and will be in English “very soon”. She has a variety of sock yarns, some lace yarns and some felting yarn.
Handgefärbt: She has pretty handpaints as well as solids
Drachenwolle: Very reasonably priced handpaints and handspun. They sell undyed wool as well.
Wolle Lust: Handspun and handpainted yarns. She also sells on ebay.
Tausendschön: A new store in Saarbrücken. The website is in German, but the owner, Claudia, speaks English. She has a variety of different sock yarns that she handpaints. In addition to her handpaints, she carries Zitron, Opal, Noro, Colinette, Karen Noe, Debbie Bliss, Gedifra, Horstia, Islandwolle, Katia, Lang, Schachenmayr, Schöller + Stahl und Rowan.
Wollpapst.de: She has a very wide selection of hand-painted yarns and very reasonably priced! She has solids as well as multicolors, undyed, as well as dyeing materials.
Das Schneeschaf: She airbrushes her yarns, sounds very interesting and the colors are so pretty! She carries sock yarn - regular 75/25 blend as well as bamboo blend, silk blends and she also has Marisilk (like HandMaiden SeaSilk)!!!
Wollinchen: Something different, this dyer sells hand dyed BFL (imported from the UK), Ashford yarns imported from New Zealand, Evilla Artyarns, roving, sock and lace yarns. She also sells spinning wheels and accessories.
Dornröschen Wolle: Christine has lots of sock yarn - 100%, 75/25, Bamboo blend and sport weight, she also sells handspun, rovings and yarn to dye.
Wollerey: A great selection of yarns and colors in a wide variety of blends. Lots of laceweight and fingering weight yarns.
Wollinchen: She has a bunch of hand dyed yarns as well as handspun. She also has all kinds of spinning equipment, fiber, and then also some Ashford Kid Mohair, evilla yarn and Schafer Anne sock yarn
Knitty Bitty: Some hand dyed yarns, as well as some Artesano, Admiral, Southwest Trading Company yarns (tofutsies, karaoke, etc). They also carry Namaste and Jordana Paige bags, and Knit Picks needles
Regular shops:
Maschenkunst: A lovely shop in Köln and her site is translated into English. I have never been there, but have heard so many good things about it. Daniela has lots of unique and unusual products in addition to the standard fare. Regia, Zitron, Colinette (!!!), Opal, Rellana, Gedifra, Isager, ggh, uruwool, Malabrigo, Online, Opal/Tutto, Rowan, Rosarios4, Schachenmayr Nomotta
Jürgen Weidner: Malabrigo and Lorna’s Laces
Ewas Sockenwolle: Lots of really affordable unplied sock yarns (3.50 for 100g). I haven’t tried them, but I’ve known others who have and love it!
Joana Leyer: Gedifra, Lana Grossa, Online, Rowan, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Noro, Opal, Regia, Meilenweit, Funny
Die Stricknadel: Austermann, Debbie Bliss, Noro, Gedifra, GGH, Lang, Online, Lana Grossa, Lanartus, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Schoeller & Stahl
Wolle + Design: Rowan, Noro, Jamieson Smith Shetland yarn
Rikes Wollmaus: Gedifra, GGH, Lana Grossa, Lang, Lanartus, Online, Regia, Rowan, Schachenmayr Nomotta
Wollmond: Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Zitron, Noro, GGH, Lanartus, Seehawer & Siebert. This site is partly in English.
Woll- und Strickstudio: Anchor, Austermann, Debbie Bliss, Gedifra, Gitterschal, Hesse, Lang Yarns, Monika Design, Noro Design, Opal, Schachenmayr, Schnäppchen, Schoeller/Stahl
Woll Factory: Site has an English version. I also ordered some Trekking from them and they were fast and everything was perfect. Zitron, Bio Bamboo, Magic, Eco Yarn, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Regia, Opal, Funny
Kemagie: Adriafil, Opal, Malabrigo
Hamburg Wollfabrik: Kinda confusing site, but basically you choose the strands you want and they put it together for you. It’s unplied yarn and very reasonably priced.
Das Strickforum: Hillesvaq, Rowan, Naturwolle Michels, Jamieson of Shetland
Wollsucht: Debbie Bliss, Drops Garn studio, Louisa Harding, Rowan, Noro, Evilla, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Karen Noe Design, Kauni, Rellana/Flotte, Opal, Regia, Schoeller + Stahl, Hot Socks, Zitron
Mariannes Opalwolle: Malabrigo, Opal, Lorna’s Laces, Regia, Online, Fortissima, Supersoxx, Rellana/Flotte, Fortissima, Zitron, Lang, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Evilla
Stil-Blüte: Louisa Harding, Naturgarne, Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Noro, Opal, Karen Noe, Lanartus, Zitron, Kauni, Filatura di Crosa, Oldmill, Gedifra
Wolle Rödel: Chain of yarn stores that also has an online shop. They sell their own line of yarns.
Rüfer: Regia, Meilenweit, Fortissima, Austermann, Online, Schoeller + Stahl, Lana Grossa
Schoppel Wolle: They sell Admiral yarns, and if I understand correctly, it is Trekking yarn under a different label.
Die WollLust: Not to be confused with woll-lust.de, this shop is one that has unplied yarns in a variety of combinations. It is grouped by color - light/dark, elegant, colorful, etc. They also carry Regia, Match, Sprint, and some undyed wool. They even sell Kool-aid and Easter egg dyes.
Martina’s Bastel und Hobbykiste: This site is in German and English. She carries Austermann, Opal, Regia, Fortissima, Online, Artesano, Trekking, Schoeller + Stahl, Supersocke, Schachenmayr Nomotta. She also has Arts & Crafts supplies.
Martina’s Creative Books: No yarns here but a HUGE selection of knitting/craft books in both English and German.
Wollatelier-Schlawin: Really, really great prices. They also have a large selection of yarns to dye. Opal, Regia, Rellana, Schoeller+Stahl.
Woolina: Has lots of wool from Uruguay (not sure if it is malabrigo or not), and also lots of roving! She sells recycled silk, handspun, and sells a humanus spinning wheels. The English version is kind of weird, missing lots of information and I couldn’t figure out how to turn it back to german.
Traub-Wolle: Your source for all things spinning and weaving. They are the German dealer of Ashford products, so they have the full line of spinning wheels, books and dyes. Lots of roving, yarn on cones, yarn to dye, and stuff for weaving. I am not familiar with weaving, so I don’t know how complete they are.
Die Wollfabrik: Lots of fiber for very reasonable prices!!
Wollknoll: Lots and lots and lots of fiber

OK, technically this isn’t a shop in Munich, but you are able to get beautiful handpainted yarns online! http://www.rohrspatzundwollmeise.de/ Handpainted yarns are not very popular here, I have no idea why. Maybe it’s too colorful and/or free form for the Germans. Who knows! But I have been very upset that I haven’t been able to get Lorna’s Laces locally and this is a nice replacement. They don’t have a big selection of muted colors, so I may just have to learn how to dye yarns myself!!!

I recently moved to Munich and was frustrated at not easily finding yarn stores (at least in English). Surely there must be more. While I’m learning what’s available here and where, I thought it would be a good idea to write things down in a blog so other people have access to it as well. I wanted to make sure people can comment on entries to so that the information stays as up to date as possible. Please let me know any improvements I can make! This is an ongoing project, so please be patient and bear with me! If you have benefited from this page, then please comment and let me know. I always want to know if my info was useful (or not).

Someone on ToyTownMunich mentioned that they bought yarn from a hobby shop at Mathäser in Karlsplatz. Well, as of May 20, 2006, they don’t have any. Please let me know if this has changed and I will update this post.

This was near Ostbahnhof and turned out to be a bunch of bars. Don’t know if it was a joke or what, but I was so disappointed! Came across this address from a post on the internet, should’ve known. But I’m glad that I at least checked it out and made sure it wasn’t a store.

Name: Alexander Wollkorb
Address: Max-Weber-Platz 8
Source: www.yellowmap.de
Status: No longer exists
In my search for stores today, I discovered that the Wollkorb on Max-Weber-Platz 8 is no longer there. I believe in it’s place is a store called “pur! pur!”, which looks a lot like “purl purl” and so I thought it was a yarn store. But when checking it out, it only had clothes in it. Dang it!

Name: Ilse Woll-Tussy
Address: Nordendstr. 62
Source: www.yellowmap.de
Status: Not a yarn store
So, I am scouring the internet for any sources of yarn stores. I looked up the yarn stores on www.yellowmap.de and found a list. I know 1/2 of them are probably not yarn stores, but I figure I should take a look, just to be sure. Also, there are some of you that would make the same mistake I did, or thinking that it maybe a store.
So, let me tell you that Ilse Woll-Tussy on Nordendstr. 62 is NOT a yarn store, even though it is listed as one in the yellow pages. Went there today and it’s a store with old clothes in it (maybe a tailor?) but NO YARN.
