Welcome

Welcome to my home page. Here is a collection of things that interest me. I've maintained a climbing log on the web for many years, and only lately branched out to record other data. My C.V., a blog, and some music projects are also on the site.

Computing

Since 1996 I've worked for Intel, Microsoft and now Avid. At Microsoft I had the pleasure of working on the Common Language Runtime (CLR), diagnosing some of the more difficult bugs in releases 1, 1.1 and 2 (Whidbey). I had a great time there and learned so much. My old work blog is still available so you can see the things I concerned myself with in 2004.

At Avid I am working on the Interplay Server which helps creative teams track media and projects. I've had the chance to morph into a Java programmer too, but occasionally get dragged back into the C++ codebase (keeps me in practice).

My C.V. is here.

FlickrLinks is a web utility I created to make it easier to post trip reports and insert pictures. I find Flickr has the best deal for long term storage of photos, nice slideshow and commenting abilities, and a great API to access the pictures programmatically. I just needed an easy way to generate lots of links.

Try it out! It's written in Python.

Family pictures

I'm lucky that my wife is a persistent and talented photographer. She's put up many pictures of our boys here. She's written about the many joys (and sorrows!) of raising twins here.

I have my own blog to record mundane thoughts about daily life, but it's updated so rarely, you have to conclude I have cobwebs in my brain!

Selected Climbing trips

I've lived in Munich since late 2005, and enjoyed some great climbs in the local mountains. Before that I learned to climb in the Pacific Northwest. I'm always looking for new partners to climb with, so here is my resume.

Here is a short list of recent trips, both recent and older that stood out in some way:

Music compositions

Long ago I was sure I'd be a famous rock guitar player. It didn't happen! To console myself I record music. Here are some tunes of wildly uneven quality (under construction).
  • asein.mp3
  • samwise.mp3
  • newStabba.mp3
  • La Meije - I had the unique experience of recording this on a rest day at the Hotel Edelweiss in La Grave before Christmas. The owner, Robin, is a guitar player and he let me use his music room for the day. On the recording I used his 12-string acoustic guitar, another acoustic steel string guitar, a Stratocaster and a bass guitar. The song is named for the impressive peak outside the window of the studio, La Meije.
I made a musical version of the story "Itsy Bitsy House," you can download the sheet music here (PDF, 100K). We sang it for the school play, Christmas 2008. I made the sheet music with a great program called Lilypond. Here is my source code (text file).
