I hear heartbeats!

Today I had an appointment with my ob/gyn and I heard their heartbeats today. One was 140, the other one was at 160. For some reason, it wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. I think ultrasounds are much more fun. You can actually see them move and stuff. The heartbeat thing is so overrated.

12 Week Ultrasound

Baby A

Baby B

Here’s our 12 week olds! Baby A (top) is 55.4mm and nuchal translucency is 1.4mm (normal). Baby B (bottom) is 62.3mm and nuchal is 2.8mm (larger than normal). If you look at Baby B’s picture, you can see the space at the back of the neck. That’s what the nuchal translucency test measures. Keep your fingers crossed for this one!

A little bit of bad news…

I was so excited today because we get another ultrasound! The babies measured 12 weeks, 3 days, one was 6 or so mm bigger than the other. This was the first time I had a tummy ultrasound. It was pretty cool to see them in there moving around. I’m sad that Michael missed this appointment. There was a little bit of bad news though. The ultrasound was done to measure their nuchal fold since the usual blood test is not valid for twins. One of the twins is fine, the other one (bigger) had a 2.8mm fold, which increases their risk of getting Downs Syndrome to 1:124. Anything higher than a 1:250 risk is considered “high risk for Downs”. Even though there is still less than a 1% chance, I was still worried. So, I’ll have to get a CVS test next week, which the test itself carries a small risk of miscarriage. I was distraught for an hour or so, but there’s nothing I can do for a few weeks so it’s not worth worrying about. I’ll take it one step at a time. I did get some ultrasound pictures and will post them soon!

Overlake Hospital Tour

Today during lunch, Michael and I went to Overlake hospital for a tour. Michael didn’t eat lunch before we left because he thought we could swing by the store. But I didn’t know he wanted to do that, so we left with only enough time to get to the hospital. It was ok, I prefer Evergreen though. But I was glad to see both so that I have a more concrete picture in my mind. The main reason I didn’t like Overlake was because there is a separate postpartum room. So, if for some reason I had to have a C-Section, I would start off in one room, get carted to the c-section room, get carted back to the original room, stay there for a few hours, then go to another room for postpartum care. At Evergreen, they have only 2 rooms you go to, instead of 3. After that, I took a short nap in the car (I was feeling really weak) while Michael ate at 3 Pigs BBQ.

Tour of hospital

Today after work, I took a tour of the hospital that I will deliver in. I am taking a tour of this one and Overlake, since I’m still undecided which one to go to. On Thursday, I’m going to tour Overlake. I think I will like Evergreen as a hospital, but probably would like the Overlake doctor that I would go to. Tough choices. It was so embarassing because I was the only one in the tour group without a partner. Michael had to do work so he couldn’t come. The more I look at the hospitals, the more I wish I was delivering at home. Oh well, c’est la vie!

Waiting for ultrasound

Sorry for not writing anything in the last week or so, nothing’s really been happening, except for my pants getting tighter (which sometimes I think it’s not due to pregnancy at all). We’ve been kind of laid back so far, but if the ultrasound that I have on friday is ok, then we will “announce it to the world”. Our parents have pretty much taken care of that for the most part though. I’ll probably post again on Friday (with another ultrasound picture), so check back then!

Sometimes, it’s no fun

I was under a lot of stress today and getting easily irritated. Sometimes, it’s just no fun being pregnant. You’re tired all the time, people always telling you what to do, what to eat, what to buy, etc. People always talking about the pregnancy and related stories. It bores me to tears. It’ll only get worse the bigger I get. Then, I’ll get strangers doing it to me in addition to the people I know. Sometimes I wish I could wear a shirt that says “Don’t ask me about my belly, it’s fine”. I apologize to any pregnant woman who I’ve talked about their baby, I now know how incredibly frustrating it is to say the same thing over and over. I guess people think it’s the polite thing to do, or it’s a topic of conversation. Ugh.

The Vibe

Today when I came into work, one of my coworkers told me “hey, the other night I had a dream that you were pregnant! So you better get with it!” And I thought that she knew what was going on and she was just making up some story. But she was shocked that I actually was. I think there must be some pregnancy vibe that is put out because that happened also with my cousin’s 2 year old daughter. When we visited them, she was on her mom’s lap and grabbing her and saying “baby”. My cousin said that she has never done that before and never did it again, only whenever we were there and she was sitting next to me. Weird, huh?

Why do people give me looks?

A few days ago, I bought some kosher dill pickles to have with my sandwich and Michael said “uh-oh”. And I’m like “What?” and he’s like “you’re pregnant”. And I’m like “Can’t I enjoy a pickle with my sandwich without people pointing fingers at me?” I mean, really, it’s not like only pregnant women eat pickles. I ate them all the time before and no one said anything and now it’s like “it’s because you’re pregnant”. Turns out, Michael ate more pickles than I did! I think his brain has a thick candy shell.

Tired as all heck!

I was soooo tired today, mainly because I’ve been staying up too late reading Deception Point. I took a very nice nap during my lunch break in the car. I brought a blanket with me this morning and it made it oh so comfy. I told Michael that if I didn’t come by his office within an hour to go and wake me up. And he had to. From the moment I closed my eyes until he opened the car door, I was sound asleep. I think that was one of the best naps ever. I seem to be eating a lot more, so that’s good. Although I usually want Lays chips and a coke at right around 4:30pm every day. So, I decided to get some sunflower seeds to see if that takes care of my salt cravings. And it did. But I ate sunflower seeds ALL DAY! My tongue hurts now, as well as the roof of my mouth. Sometimes I just don’t know when to stop.
