Baldy Mountain
Friends: Only God!Location: Baldy Mountain
Elevation gain: 1400m = 1400m
I wore my ice boots and carried snowshoes and spikes, along with an ice ax for this hike up Baldy Mountain in the Snake River Range, near the town of Alpine.
Wow, the wind was cold at the start! My feet were warm in ice boots, but I wore a light fleece jacket all day, and spent the first 30 minutes climbing steeply and fighting frozen fingers!
Finally, I was warm enough. I made it more than 2000 feet up before snow became heavier. Finally, on the summit of Little Baldy Mountain I put snowshoes on, and gee, the work really began here. I made tracks up the ridge, avoiding cornices. Finally I stood on top and looked north to the Grand Teton. What a great view in a cold place!
Coming down was much faster. Only 6 miles round trip, but it felt like a full day with 4600 feet elevation gain/loss.
